Symposium on Boys’ Health 

This symposium brings to campus three guests to present to students and faculty on topics related to boys’ health. The symposium begins Sunday evening with an all-campus assembly featuring Woodberry’s very first Noland Distinguished Visitor, Dr. Adam J. Cox. The Noland Distinguished Visitors Program was established in 2007 by Lloyd U. Noland III ’62 to support noted scholars, business leaders, and public servants on campus as leaders-in-residence.

7:00 PM Talk by Adam J. Cox, Ph.D., ABPP – Bowman-Gray Auditorium (Chapel Attire)

 

Dr. Cox, a board licensed and certified clinical psychologist, earned his doctorate from Lehigh University and completed his clinical training at Friend’s Hospital in Philadelphia. An advocate for children’s mental health and a frequent conference lecturer, he is the author of several books, including Boys of Few Words:  Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect.  Dr. Cox conducts research on behalf of the International Boys’ Schools Coalition. He travels the world, visiting boys’ schools and interviewing students and teachers about what it means to be a boy.

 

Study hall will begin at the conclusion of Dr. Cox’s presentation.

Mr. Martinez is educational program manager with the Taylor Hooten Foundation and a talented athlete and youth baseball coach. Created by Dan Hooten after the death of his son Taylor, who took his own life after abusing steroids, the Taylor Hooten Foundation educates students on the dangers of performance- enhancing drugs.

 

 

Third and Fourth Forms

Presentation by W. Christopher Winter, M.D. – St. Andrew’s Chapel

 

Dr. Winter, a board-certified neurologist and sleep medicine expert, is the owner of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine.  An Echols Scholar graduate of the University of Virginia, he earned his medical degree from Emory University. Dr. Winter treats patients, authors papers, and presents widely on sleep science. An avid triathlete, he is a member of Men’s Health magazine’s advisory board; he consults with a number of professional and college sports teams to help members optimize their sleep.
