Woodberry Forest School

As we celebrate our 125th academic year at Woodberry Forest, I welcome you to the school and to the special events that mark this milestone year.

Founded in 1889, Woodberry Forest is steeped in tradition and famous for its legendary honor system. The values that we espouse today are those that our founder championed at the very beginning of the school. To a remarkable degree, Woodberry continues its founder’s ideal of what an all-boarding school with the highest academic standards should be. Our mission has not changed, and we remain committed to being the best school a boy can attend. At the same time, Woodberry has eagerly embraced change by welcoming new developments in pursuit of educational excellence.

Woodberry faculty members in every department are at the cutting edge of their disciplines, so our students are prepared for the most rigorous college and university curriculums. Our residential life program is tailored to provide the best in experiential education for leadership. The humanities and the arts flourish at Woodberry because of strong support and outstanding facilities. Our athletic opportunities have always been exceptional.

A delicate balance of continuity and change characterizes Woodberry Forest. Our 125th anniversary year is an occasion to lift up the enduring values of absolute intellectual thoroughness, moral integrity, sportsmanship in all things, and respect and appreciation for the spiritual life. Our new boys this year were selected from the largest number of applications the school has ever received. We recently finished the Our Strong Band campaign, far exceeding our $100 million goal by raising almost $112 million to benefit the school. Our brand new, state-of-the-art Manning Family Science Building places us at the forefront of the STEM disciplines. Last but not least, construction is underway on a major new building that will include new facilities for math, dining, and an expanded computer science program.

While we take justifiable pride in the Woodberry’s accomplishments, our 125th anniversary is also a time to look forward. There is much yet to be done, and our alumni and friends are famous for their loyalty and support.

Everything we do this year will be geared toward recognizing the school’s distinctive past and promising future. We are excited to welcome special speakers and programs in support of all aspects of our community life, and we welcome your engagement and participation.
